How to Build a $0-to-$10K AI Content Workflow (Tools + Pricing Breakdown)
A step-by-step content engine that took one solo operator from zero to $10K/month in 9 months — including every tool, every prompt, and what each tier actually costs.

The four-layer content stack
Every functional AI content workflow has the same four layers: research (what to write), writing (the draft), editing (human + AI), and publishing (where it goes). Founders fail when they buy 8 tools to do those 4 jobs.
The stack below uses one tool per layer plus one orchestrator. Total monthly cost at the $10K MRR stage is $179. We'll break down each tier as you scale.
Tier 1: Bootstrapping ($0–$2K MRR)
Total cost: $20/month. Just ChatGPT Plus. At this stage you're publishing 2 pieces per week to validate topics and voice. Don't buy more — buying more software at this tier is a procrastination tax.
The workflow: ChatGPT generates 10 topic ideas weekly based on your niche, you pick 2, you draft them with ChatGPT, you edit them yourself, you publish to a free Substack or Ghost trial.
Tier 2: Finding signal ($2K–$5K MRR)
Total cost: $69/month. Add Jasper Pro for brand voice consistency once you're publishing 3+ pieces per week. The 2-hour-per-week saved on voice-matching is worth it the moment freelance editors get involved.
Workflow upgrade: ChatGPT for research, Jasper for first drafts, human editor for final pass. Output: 3 pieces/week, all on-voice, ~4 hours of your time.
Tier 3: Scaling output ($5K–$10K MRR)
Total cost: $179/month. Add Make.com Pro ($19) and an SEO tool like Surfer or Frase (~$70/mo). Now you have a real engine: SEO surfaces opportunities, Make pulls them into a content brief queue, Jasper drafts against the brief, you edit and ship.
Output: 4–5 pieces/week, every piece SEO-targeted, ~5 hours of your time. This is where the curve compounds — every piece you publish at this tier ranks within 60–90 days and starts driving organic traffic without further work.
What we DON'T recommend buying
AI image generators (just use ChatGPT or Midjourney pay-per-use), AI video tools (overkill at this stage), SEO automation suites with 80 features you'll use 6 of, and agency-tier subscriptions you can't actually fill the seats for.
Discipline matters more than tooling. Three tools used well beats eight tools used badly. Every. Single. Time.
The bigger lesson
The $10K MRR threshold isn't a tooling problem — it's a consistency problem. The workflow above works because it produces predictable output at a predictable cost in a predictable amount of time. AI tools don't replace the work of showing up; they make showing up cheaper and faster.
